In Québec (2007)
In Québec, some 105,600 people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s or related diseases.
- 74,700 women
- 30,900 men
More women than men have the disease. Two-thirds of people over the age of 65 with the disease are women. Most caregivers are also women.
It is estimated that, by 2031, more than 187,500 people in Québec will have Alzheimer’s or related diseases.
In Montréal alone, over 30,000 families are affected by Alzheimer’s or related diseases.
In Canada
In Canada, one out of every 13 people over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s or a related disease.
One person out of three over the age of 85 has Alzheimer’s or a related disease.
It is estimated that, by 2031, more than 750,000 Canadians will have Alzheimer’s or related diseases.
Worldwide
At present, 18 million people in the world have an irreversible cognitive disease, and it is estimated that the figure will reach 34 million by 2025.
Currently, 66% of people with an irreversible cognitive disease live in developing countries, and it is estimated that the proportion will reach 75% by 2025.
With the aging population, we will see an increasing number of people with Alzheimer’s disease. This will become the greatest social and medical burden in Canadian healthcare. |
