Walk for Memories

A Québec-wide Event

Established in 2006 by the Fédération québécoise des Sociétés Alzheimer, the Walk for Memories is held simultaneously in several cities throughout the province. In Montréal, the first walk was held in Parc du Mont-Royal, under honorary president Helen Fotopulos, mayor of the borough of Plateau-Mont-Royal.

Walking Makes a Difference!

In Montréal, more than 30,000 families are affected by Alzheimer’s or related diseases. The Alzheimer Society of Montréal plays an important role in helping those families.

You can also help make a difference for people with Alzheimer’s and their families.

Participate in the Walk for Memories and help us to:

  • Increase awareness
  • Make a financial contribution to research
  • Accompany people with the disease
  • Support caregivers
  • Provide training to healthcare professionals
  • Fight the disease

2009 Edition

On May 31st, over 500 walkers invaded the pathways on the Quays of Montreal Old-Port and De La Commune Street, despite a strong wind and an uncertain weather. Thanks to their support, as well as our numerous partners and sponsors, over 100,000 dollars were raised for the Memory Walk 2009! Congratulations!

Dr. Howard Bergman, Director – Division of Geriatric Medicine at McGill University / Jewish General Hospital, seized the occasion to present the highlights of his report on Alzheimer’s disease. He was accompanied by the Minister of Health, Dr. Yves Bolduc, the Minister for Social services, Lise Thériault, and the Minister Responsible for Seniors, Marguerite Blais.

Other dignitaries were present at the Walk, in particular Mr. Gilles Duceppe, Leader of the Bloc Québécois, Mr. Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, as well as Mrs. Helen Fotopulos, Mayor of Plateau Mont-Royal Borough and Honorary President of the event.

The sun finally appeared during the picnic that took place after the Walk. With it, the musicians from the group “The Classics” cheered up the crowd to the sound of several successes of the 60’s and 70’s.

Simultaneously, as well as during the weekend preceding the Walk, some senior homes organized parallel activities in order to raise funds and increase the awareness of the residents about Alzheimer’s disease. Thanks to the residences Maywood in Pointe-Claire, Belvédère de Lachine and Verrières du Golf.

The RONA stores of Les Galeries d’Anjou and Côte-Vertu, as well as the Réno-Dépôt Marché Central, held a few “$1 at the cash” days, with which they raised over $3,000 for the Alzheimer Society. Thank you!

We are giving you a new rendezvous on May 30th, 2010, and we thank you wholeheartedly for your essential support to our mission!
