Support Groups

For Caregivers

The Alzheimer Society of Montréal offers two types of support groups for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or related diseases:

  1. Eight-week support groups;
  2. Monthly support groups.

Eight-week groups (Caregivers)

These meetings, held over a period of eight consecutive weeks, help participants to better understand various aspects of the disease. Our qualified facilitators (aides or specialised counsellors) address various topics with caregivers in the meetings, such as:

  1. Theories about the disease;
  2. Communication strategies;
  3. Difficult behaviours;
  4. Daily care;
  5. Stress management.  

Schedule:

1.5 hours per meeting, for eight weeks

Monthly support groups (Caregivers)

Facilitated by an aide or specialised counsellor, these groups provide an opportunity for caregivers to share their experiences and offer mutual support and reassurance in a warm, friendly atmosphere. According to participants’ requirements, various topics related to the disease are addressed, such as new research findings or medications.

Duration:

Open (caregivers may attend for as long as the group meets their needs)

Schedule:

One two-hour meeting per month (in the evening or afternoon)

For People With Alzheimer’s Disease or Related Disorders

As it does for caregivers, the Alzheimer Society of Montréal offers two types of support groups for people with mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s or related diseases:

  1. Eight-week support groups;
  2. Monthly support groups.

Eight-week groups (People with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders)

Facilitated by an aide or specialised counsellor, the purpose of these meetings is to provide people with the disease with information, a friendly ear and understanding, in order to help them learn to accept their disease and to better cope with its inherent difficulties.

Schedule:

Two-hour meetings, for eight consecutive weeks, in the afternoon

At the Alzheimer Society of Montréal

 

Monthly support groups (People with Alzheimer’s or related disorders)

Facilitated by an aide or specialised counsellor, these groups provide an opportunity for people with the disease to share their experiences, express their uncertainties, fears and emotions surrounding the disease, and to break their isolation and raise their spirits in a reassuring environment promoting a sense of belonging and offering stimulating activities. According to participants’ requirements, various topics related to the disease are addressed, such as new research findings or medications.

Open (people may attend for as long as the group meets their needs)

Schedule:

One two-hour meeting per month, in the afternoon
