Safely Home™

Alzheimer’s disease progressively damages different areas of the brain. People with the disease may therefore lose the ability to recognize familiar places or forget their name and address. People with Alzheimer’s disease can also feel the need to take a stroll outside or run an errand without necessarily informing another person. As a result, the person with the disease can get lost and have difficulty finding their way back, let alone communicating to another person why they left home in the first place.

The Safely Home™ programme, developed in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, uses a computer database containing information about the person with Alzheimer’s. This database can be accessed by all police departments, allowing officers to locate individuals who have wandered away and return them safely home.

Upon registration in the national Safely Home™ registry, the person with Alzheimer’s receives:

  1. An identity bracelet;
  2. A Caregiver Handbook;
  3. Identification cards.

The individual’s file is also updated annually.
